What appliance and electronics involves

The best way to get rid of old appliances and electronics is to call a crew that actually knows where things go. Most haulers dump everything in a landfill and call it a day. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. Refrigerators, washers, dryers, televisions, computers, monitors, and more can all be scheduled for pickup in the same call. Call (612) 444-5865 and we'll get you on the schedule, often the same week.

Here's what drives the scope on a job like this: how many items you have, whether they're in an accessible spot or buried in a basement, and whether any of them contain refrigerants that need certified handling before transport. Appliances with compressors (fridges, AC units, dehumidifiers) have to be drained by a certified technician before they can be recycled, and our crews are trained for exactly that. Electronics get sorted separately from metal appliances because the recycling streams are different. Computers and monitors go to e-waste processors who can recover materials without releasing toxins. Every job is different. Contact Junk Genius - Minneapolis for an accurate estimate.

WHAT WE TAKE

Appliances and Electronics We Pick Up

If it plugs in or runs on refrigerant, there's a responsible way to get rid of it. We handle both.

Refrigerators and Freezers

These contain refrigerants that can't just go to a scrap yard. We handle certified refrigerant removal and route the unit to a licensed appliance recycler. Old chest freezers in garages are one of the most common items we haul.

Washers, Dryers, and Dishwashers

Heavy, bulky, and awkward to move through a hallway. We've been doing this for about 15 years. Our crew loads them out without gouging walls or floors, and the metal gets recycled through our metal recycling stream.

Televisions and Monitors

Old CRT televisions and flat-screen monitors both contain materials that require e-waste processing. We don't dump them. They go to certified processors who recover the components properly.

Computers, Laptops, and Printers

Hard drives are physically destroyed before recycling, so your data isn't just floating around in a bin somewhere. Printers, routers, and other office equipment get sorted into the same e-waste stream.

Stoves, Ovens, and Microwaves

Whether it's a freestanding range or a built-in unit someone pulled out during a remodel, we'll take it. Stoves are straightforward metal recycling. Microwaves have electronic components that get separated out.

Small Appliances and Misc. Electronics

Toasters, blenders, window AC units, dehumidifiers, stereo equipment, cable boxes. If you've got a pile of small stuff alongside a big appliance, we take the whole lot in one trip.

    We Do the Heavy Lifting

We Sort It and Route It Right

Appliances, electronics, and scrap metal go to separate destinations. Refrigerants get certified handling. Usable items get checked for donation. The goal is always to keep it out of the landfill.

WHY IT MATTERS

What Actually Happens to Your Old Appliances

Honestly, most people don't think about what happens after a junk truck pulls away. And a lot of the time, the answer isn't great. Old refrigerators that still contain refrigerants are a real environmental problem when they end up in a landfill. CRT televisions contain lead and mercury. Computers have lithium batteries and circuit boards with materials that require specific handling. We've been sorting loads and routing items to recyclers for about 15 years, and our crews are certified in Recycling Management and Waste Management Safety, so this isn't something we bolted on as a selling point. It's how we actually operate. When you schedule a pickup with us, you can track where your items went. We don't just say we recycle. We do it. And for anything that's still in working condition, we check it against our local charity partners first before it goes to a recycler. That matters to a lot of our customers, especially during home cleanouts and estate jobs where there's plenty of life left in the stuff being cleared out.

FREQUENTLY ASKED

Questions About Appliance and Electronics Recycling

Where can I take old electronics to be recycled for free?
Some municipalities and big-box retailers offer free drop-off for certain electronics, but most have restrictions on size, quantity, or item type. Junk Genius charges for the service because we come to you, handle the loading, and guarantee proper routing to certified e-waste processors. Free drop-off sites often have limited hours and won't take large appliances. For a full load of mixed electronics, a scheduled pickup is almost always faster and easier.
What is the best way to get rid of old appliances?
Call a licensed hauler who handles refrigerant certification and knows how to separate appliance types for proper recycling. Dragging a fridge to the curb and hoping someone takes it isn't a plan. If the appliance still works, donation is an option we check first. If it doesn't, it needs to be disassembled correctly. Our crews are trained in Waste Management Safety and MSW Hauling specifically for this kind of work.
Do refrigerants in old appliances require special handling before recycling?
Yes. Refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers contain refrigerants (typically R-12, R-22, or R-134a) that have to be extracted by a certified technician before the unit can go to a scrap processor. Our crew handles this correctly. Don't let a hauler tell you they can just toss a fridge in the truck without addressing the refrigerant first.
What happens to the data on computers and hard drives you pick up?
Hard drives are physically destroyed before anything goes to an e-waste processor. We don't just reformat and send them along. If that level of certainty matters to you, tell us when you schedule and we can walk you through the process. Laptops, desktops, and servers all follow the same protocol.
Can you pick up both appliances and electronics in the same trip?
Yes, and that's usually how it goes. A lot of our customers doing a garage cleanout have an old fridge, a broken TV, a pile of computer equipment, and a washer all in the same space. One truck, one price, sorted correctly at the back end. We keep appliances, e-waste, and metal separate during transport so each stream goes to the right facility.
Are there items you won't accept in an appliance or electronics pickup?
We don't take hazardous materials like paint, solvents, or batteries that require specific disposal beyond standard e-waste processing. If you're not sure whether something qualifies, call us at (612) 444-5865 before the appointment. It's faster than guessing, and we'd rather sort it out in advance.
