What appliance removal involves

The most common question we get about appliance removal is what it actually costs and where the old unit ends up. Good questions. Junk Genius has been hauling appliances across the Twin Cities metro for about 15 years, and we're upfront about both. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. Call (612) 444-5865 for a free quote and same-week scheduling.

Appliance disposal gets complicated fast. Older refrigerators and freezers contain ozone-depleting refrigerants that can't go to a regular landfill. Washers and dryers have motors and drums worth salvaging. Even a stove has steel that's worth keeping out of the ground. We handle all of it properly through certified recycling partners, and we donate units that still have life in them through our donation drop-off network. Cost varies by the number of items, where they're located in the home, and how much disassembly is involved. Single-appliance pickups run on the lower end; a full basement or garage cleanout with multiple units will cost more. Every job is different, contact Junk Genius for an accurate estimate.

What We Haul

Appliances and Electronics We Take

If it plugs in or runs on gas and you don't want it anymore, there's a good chance we take it.

Refrigerators and Freezers

Full-size, mini, chest, upright, we handle refrigerant recovery requirements and keep these units out of the landfill. Older models especially need certified disposal.

Washers and Dryers

Top-load, front-load, gas or electric. We disconnect and haul from wherever they're sitting, including second-floor laundry rooms. No need to move them first.

Stoves and Ovens

Freestanding ranges, wall ovens, and cooktops. Gas or electric. We pull them out, cap safely if needed, and haul them to the appropriate recycling facility.

Dishwashers and Microwaves

Built-in or freestanding, over-the-range or countertop. We remove and recycle these smaller units just as responsibly as the big ones.

TVs and Computer Monitors

Flat-screens, CRTs, and computer monitors all go to certified e-waste recycling. We don't drop electronics in the regular waste stream.

Printers and Small Electronics

Printers, scanners, stereo equipment, and other household electronics are accepted. We handle responsible e-waste disposal so none of it ends up where it shouldn't.

Why It Matters

Responsible Appliance Recycling, Not Just Hauling

Curbside disposal isn't just inconvenient: for many appliances, it's actually illegal.

Throwing a refrigerator to the curb isn't a neutral act. Older units contain chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) that must be extracted by certified technicians before the unit can be scrapped. Set out incorrectly, these chemicals vent into the atmosphere and contribute to ozone depletion. We take refrigerant recovery seriously and work exclusively with facilities equipped to handle it. Beyond the chemistry, there's a real resource argument for recycling. Upgrading from an old refrigerator to an energy-efficient model can save close to 700 kWh annually. That's roughly $70 back in your pocket every year. The steel, copper, and aluminum in your old washer or dryer are worth recovering rather than burying. At Junk Genius, we recycle what can be recycled and donate what's still usable to local organizations in need. That's not a marketing line. It's what the crews actually do on every run.

Who Calls Us

Residential and Commercial Appliance Removal

Homeowners Upgrading or Moving

New fridge getting delivered tomorrow and no one's taking the old one? That's the most common call we get. We coordinate timing so the space is clear when the new unit arrives. Moving out and leaving a washer and dryer? We'll clear it before your close date.

Landlords and Property Managers

Tenant left appliances behind? We do bulk pickup and foreclosure cleanouts regularly. One call, one crew, everything gone. We've handled full kitchen and laundry sets in rental properties across the metro. Commercial junk removal is a routine part of what we do.

Renovation and Remodel Projects

Contractors and homeowners gutting a kitchen or laundry room call us when the old appliances need to leave before the new work can start. We work around your project schedule and take the units the same day in most cases.

What Customers Say

Real Reviews from Real Jobs

Riley Jay

Sosa and Diego did an incredible job on my garage. I had bought a house and the seller had left all sorts of junk in the garage including an old fridge and many mattresses. They were able to work with me to get it done fast and affordably. I will definitely be keeping them in mind for future work

Diane Hansmeier

I had a few places come do estimates, and Junk Genius was definitely the most reasonable. They were also able to switch our day/time when we had something coming up. Big shout out to Lester and Isaiah! They were friendly, respectful of the space, and incredibly efficient!

Dusty Kemmis

Fast and very good communication. Cleaned out some debris I have been looking at for months. Well worth the price for getting it gone quickly. Saved me a day of doing it myself. Thank you!

Common Questions

Appliance Removal FAQ

How much does it cost to get rid of old appliances?
Appliance removal pricing depends on the number of units, where they're located (a basement fridge takes more labor than a garage fridge), and whether any disassembly is involved. Single-item pickups are on the lower end of the scale; removing a full kitchen set or multiple units in one trip costs more. We don't publish flat rates because a number on a page almost never reflects the actual job. Call (612) 444-5865 for a free, no-obligation quote.
What is the best way to dispose of old appliances?
Curbside disposal is often the worst option, not the easiest. Refrigerators and freezers contain refrigerants that must be recovered by certified technicians before the units can be scrapped. The best approach is a licensed hauler who uses certified recycling partners for hazardous materials and donates functional units rather than dumping everything. That's exactly how Junk Genius handles every pickup.
Does Home Depot charge for appliance removal?
Home Depot and most big-box retailers will haul away an old appliance when they deliver a new one, but the service is typically limited to the same appliance type being replaced, and it often requires a delivery fee plus a removal fee. They won't take units that aren't being replaced, they won't enter basements or tight spaces, and they don't recycle responsibly. We take whatever you've got, wherever it's sitting.
Do you remove appliances that still work?
Absolutely. Functional appliances are the ones we prefer to get, honestly, because they go straight to one of our local charity partners rather than a recycling facility. If your old washer runs fine but you're upgrading, there's a good chance it ends up helping someone who needs it. We work with area donation organizations to place usable units rather than scrapping them.
Can you remove a refrigerator from a basement or tight space?
Yes, and this is exactly the situation where hiring a crew beats a weekend DIY attempt. Refrigerators are heavy, awkward, and narrow stairwells make them dangerous to move without proper equipment. Our crews handle basement appliance removal regularly. We bring the right gear and the right number of people for the job. If you're not sure whether the space will be a problem, just describe it when you call and we'll tell you straight.
Are there appliances you won't take?
We don't haul propane tanks, certain types of hazardous waste, or items containing asbestos. Most standard household appliances, refrigerators, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, window AC units, are fine. If you've got something unusual, call us and we'll tell you directly whether we can take it. We'd rather give you a straight answer than make you guess.
More questions (3)Fewer questions
Can you remove a refrigerator from a basement or difficult location?
Yes. Basement refrigerator removal is one of the more common calls we get, and it's genuinely dangerous without the right equipment and crew size. Narrow stairwells and heavy units are a bad combination when someone's going it alone. Our crews bring the right gear and enough people for the space. Describe the situation when you call and we'll tell you exactly what to expect.
What refrigerant regulations apply to old appliance disposal in Minnesota?
Minnesota follows EPA Section 608 regulations, which require that refrigerants be recovered by certified technicians before any appliance containing them is scrapped. This applies to refrigerators, freezers, window AC units, and dehumidifiers. Setting one of these out at the curb intact is a violation. Junk Genius routes these units through certified facilities equipped to handle refrigerant recovery before scrapping or recycling.
Are there appliances or items you won't remove?
We don't haul propane tanks, asbestos-containing materials, or certain categories of hazardous chemical waste. Standard household appliances are fine across the board. If you have something unusual, call and ask. We'll give you a direct answer. We'd rather tell you upfront than show up and leave you with a problem.
