What storage cleanouts involves

The best way to clean out a storage unit is to stop doing it yourself one carload at a time. Call a crew that shows up with a truck big enough to finish in one visit. Junk Genius has cleared hundreds of storage units across the Twin Cities, and the job always looks the same: we load it, we sort it, we haul it. You hand over the key and stop writing checks to the facility. If you've been putting this off for months, (612) 444-5865 is the number to dial. Same-week scheduling, no obligation to commit before you see the quote.

What drives the cost on a storage unit cleanout is pretty straightforward: unit size, how densely it's packed, and whether there are appliances, mattresses, or oversized furniture in the mix. A mostly-empty 5x5 is not the same job as a stuffed 10x20. Nationally, full-service storage unit cleanouts range from a few hundred dollars on the low end to well over $1,000 for a large, packed unit with heavy items. We don't charge a flat rate because a flat rate either rips somebody off or costs us money. Every job is different. Contact Junk Genius - Minneapolis for an accurate estimate before we lift a single box. And for jobs where a full-service crew isn't what you need, we also offer dumpster rental as a separate option for DIYers who want to do the sorting themselves.

How It Works

Three Steps to an Empty Unit

  1. 01

    Call or Book Online

Tell us roughly what's in the unit and the facility location. We'll give you an upfront quote range before we ever show up. No surprises when the truck arrives.

  2. 02

    We Load Everything

Our crew handles all the lifting, carrying, and loading. Narrow hallways, freight elevators, second-floor units. We've done it all. You don't touch a thing.

  3. 03

    We Sort, Donate, Recycle

We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible. We sort on-site so the right items go to the right place.

What We Take

Most Storage Units Are Full of the Same Things

After about 15 years clearing units across the Twin Cities, we've seen it all, and we haul most of it.

Furniture

Couches, dressers, bed frames, dining sets. Furniture removal is one of the most common reasons people call us. We load and haul it without scratching the facility walls.

Mattresses

Mattresses can't go to most donation centers in used condition. We route them to proper mattress recycling so they don't end up in a landfill.

Appliances

Old refrigerators, washers, dryers, and window units are heavy. Our crews are certified in waste management safety and handle appliance removal as a matter of routine.

Boxes and Bags

Loose items, mystery boxes, bags you never unpacked after the move. We haul them out without requiring you to sort every one before we arrive.

Electronics

TVs, computers, printers. We don't toss electronics in the general waste stream. They get routed through proper e-waste processing, which is the only legal way to dispose of them in Minnesota.

General Debris

Broken tools, old sporting equipment, holiday decorations that haven't seen daylight in a decade. If it's not hazardous, we'll load it. For trash removal and disposal questions, we're straight with you up front about what qualifies.

Why It Takes Longer Than You Think

Honest Talk About Storage Unit Cleanouts

A 10x10 storage unit that looks manageable from the doorway is rarely manageable once you start pulling things out. Stuff stacked floor to ceiling is dense. Items shift. You find things you forgot about and have to make decisions you weren't expecting to make. Most people who try this themselves end up making three or four trips to the dump and burning a full weekend. We've cleared enough units to know exactly how long a job will take and exactly what a truck that size holds. The unit Mike's crew can clear in one visit would take most people two days. That's not a pitch. It's just what about 15 years in the trade teaches you. If you're weighing professional junk removal vs. DIY, the storage unit scenario is usually where the math tips hardest toward calling us.

Frequently asked questions

Do you work around storage facility hours and access restrictions?
Yes. Most Twin Cities storage facilities have specific gate hours, and some have narrow hallways or require elevator use. Our crews navigate all of that regularly. When you book, tell us the facility name and any known access restrictions and we'll schedule around their hours. We don't charge extra for elevator or hallway work.
What happens to items from the storage unit after you haul them?
We sort on-site before anything goes into the truck. Furniture, clothing, and household goods in usable condition go to local charity partners. Electronics get routed through proper e-waste recycling, not the general waste stream. Mattresses go to mattress-specific recycling facilities. We donate and recycle as much as we can whenever possible.
Can you clean out a storage unit the same week I call?
Most of the time, yes. We're available Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and same-week scheduling is standard for storage unit jobs. Call (612) 444-5865 and we'll tell you the first available slot. If you've got a lease end date coming up fast, mention that when you call.
